Dashami is the 10th lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, occurring twice every month โ€” once in the Shukla Paksha and once in the Krishna Paksha. It holds special significance as several major Hindu festivals fall on this tithi.

The most celebrated Dashami is Vijayadashami (Dussehra), falling on Ashvina Shukla Dashami, which marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and the conclusion of the nine-day Navratri festival. It is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar, observed across India with processions, effigies, and celebrations of the triumph of good over evil.

Dashami โ€“ Significance, Festivals & Rituals

What is Dashami?

Dashami is the 10th lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, occurring twice every month โ€” once in the Shukla Paksha and once in the Krishna Paksha. It is best known as the tithi of Vijayadashami, one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar.

What is Vijayadashami?

Vijayadashami (Dussehra) falls on Ashvina Shukla Dashami and marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. It also marks the conclusion of Navratri, the nine-day worship of Goddess Durga. Giant effigies of Ravana are burnt across India on this day.

What is the significance of Dashami in Navratri?

Vijayadashami concludes the Navratri festival and is the day when the idol of Goddess Durga is ceremonially immersed in water (Durga Visarjan) in Bengal and other eastern states. It signifies the departure of the goddess after her annual visit to her parental home.

Why is Dashami considered auspicious for new beginnings?

Vijayadashami is considered one of the most auspicious days to begin new ventures, purchase vehicles or property, start education (Vidyarambham), and perform Shastra Puja โ€” the worship of tools and weapons. The energy of victory associated with this day is believed to bless all new beginnings.
