Dwitiya Dates 2024

Dwitiya is the 2nd lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, occurring twice every month โ€” once in the Shukla Paksha and once in the Krishna Paksha. It is considered an auspicious tithi for beginning new endeavours and is associated with brotherly bonds in Hindu tradition.

The most celebrated Dwitiya is Bhai Dooj (Kartik Shukla Dwitiya), which falls two days after Diwali and celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Yamadvitiya, another name for this day, is dedicated to Yama โ€” the god of death โ€” and sisters pray for the long life of their brothers.

Dwitiya โ€“ Significance, Festivals & Rituals

What is Dwitiya?

Dwitiya is the 2nd lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, occurring twice every month โ€” once in the Shukla Paksha and once in the Krishna Paksha. It is associated with brotherly bonds and is considered auspicious for beginning new activities.

What is Bhai Dooj?

Bhai Dooj, also called Yamadvitiya, falls on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya โ€” two days after Diwali. Sisters apply tilak on their brothers' foreheads and pray for their long life and wellbeing, while brothers offer gifts. It is one of the most widely celebrated festivals of the Diwali season.

Why is it called Yamadvitiya?

According to Hindu mythology, Yama (the god of death) visited his sister Yamuna on this day. She welcomed him with a tilak and a feast, and Yama declared that any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day will be blessed with long life and protection from untimely death.

Which other festivals fall on Dwitiya?

Chaitra Shukla Dwitiya is observed as Sindhara Dooj in Rajasthan. Ashvina Shukla Dwitiya marks the second day of Sharad Navratri. In some traditions, Dwitiya is considered auspicious for travel and the commencement of educational studies.
