Trayodashi Dates 2020

Trayodashi is the 13th lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, occurring twice every month โ€” once in the Shukla Paksha and once in the Krishna Paksha. It is most widely known as the day of Pradosh Vrat, one of the most important observances dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The most celebrated Trayodashi is Dhanteras (Kartik Krishna Trayodashi), which marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. It is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, and is considered highly auspicious for purchasing gold, silver, and new utensils. Pradosh Vrat, observed on every Trayodashi, is a powerful Shiva observance performed during the twilight hours.

Trayodashi โ€“ Significance, Festivals & Rituals

What is Trayodashi?

Trayodashi is the 13th lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, occurring twice every month โ€” once in the Shukla Paksha and once in the Krishna Paksha. It is the tithi of Pradosh Vrat, one of the most important monthly observances dedicated to Lord Shiva.

What is the connection between Trayodashi and Pradosh Vrat?

Pradosh Vrat is observed on every Trayodashi โ€” both Shukla and Krishna Paksha. The Pradosh period (the 1.5 hours around sunset on Trayodashi) is considered the most auspicious time to worship Lord Shiva. There are thus 24 Pradosh Vrats in a regular year.

What is Dhanteras and why does it fall on Trayodashi?

Dhanteras falls on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi and marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. It is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and god of Ayurveda. Purchasing gold, silver, and new utensils on Dhanteras is considered highly auspicious and is a widespread tradition across India.

What other festivals fall on Trayodashi?

Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism), falls on Chaitra Shukla Trayodashi and is one of the most important festivals in the Jain calendar. Pradosh Vrat on Saturdays (Shani Trayodashi) and Mondays (Soma Trayodashi) are observed with special significance.
