Pratipada Dates 2025

Pratipada is the 1st lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, marking the beginning of each fortnight. It occurs twice every month โ€” once at the start of the Shukla Paksha (after Amavasya) and once at the start of the Krishna Paksha (after Purnima).

The Shukla Paksha Pratipada is considered especially auspicious as it marks the beginning of the waxing moon cycle. Several important festivals fall on Pratipada, including Gudi Padwa (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada), which marks the Hindu New Year in Maharashtra and other parts of India.

Pratipada โ€“ Significance, Festivals & Rituals

What is Pratipada?

Pratipada is the 1st lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, marking the start of each fortnight. It occurs twice every month โ€” once after Amavasya (Shukla Pratipada) and once after Purnima (Krishna Pratipada).

What is Gudi Padwa?

Gudi Padwa falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and marks the Hindu New Year in Maharashtra, Goa, and parts of Karnataka. It is celebrated by erecting a Gudi (decorated pole) outside homes as a symbol of victory and prosperity. The same day is celebrated as Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.

Which other festivals fall on Pratipada?

Kartik Shukla Pratipada is observed as Govardhan Puja (Annakut), the day after Diwali, when Lord Krishna's victory over Indra is celebrated. Ashvina Shukla Pratipada marks the beginning of Sharad Navratri, the most widely observed Navratri in India.

Why is Shukla Pratipada considered auspicious?

Shukla Pratipada marks the start of the waxing moon cycle, symbolising new beginnings, growth, and positive energy. It is considered an ideal time to start new ventures, make important decisions, and perform auspicious ceremonies.
